UPDATE: Demolition of seven historic immigrant cottages in the 1200 block of Fifth Street SE began this morning.
Diane Drahos, 53, watched an excavator tear into the 125-year-old home where she and her mother, Hattie Drahos, lived when seven feet of floodwater filled the main floor. It was in their family for three generations.
In about 10 minutes, the brown house at 1215 Fifth St. SE was flattened. Three more of the cottages across from St. Wenceslaus Church were supposed to be razed Tuesday.
“A lot of history is going down the gutter,” Drahos said.
