Diercks makes impact with Legends racing

Jul. 18, 2013 5:43 pm
CEDAR RAPIDS - When Al Diercks discusses auto racing his passion and excitement for the sport is apparent.
Legends cars and their run on asphalt has received the majority of his focus.
Diercks has been a catalyst for the return and growth of the division at Hawkeye Downs Speedway. The track will host an INEX Legends car asphalt national qualifier, providing a chance to advance to the national event Sept 12-15 at Lake Erie Speedway in Erie, Pa. Weekly points races begin at 7:30 p.m.
Diercks and Warren Ropp were instrumental in the class returning to Hawkeye Downs in 2010 and running full-time again here in 2011.
“Racing is fun,” said Diercks, noting the style of race cars can be driven as is anywhere in the world. “There's nothing more challenging (and) nothing that gets your adrenaline rushing as much as racing.”
The division has seen strong numbers at Hawkeye Downs and that promises to be greater tonight. More drivers are expected to make the trek for the national qualifier.
Competition will be held in four divisions, consisting of Young Lions (12 to 16 year olds), semipro, pro and masters, which features drivers 40 and older.
The top two cars in each division receive automatic starts in the national race.
“They're coming from five to six state area,” Diercks said. “If it's anything like last week, it's going to be pretty wild.”
The class, featuring the 5/8-scale full-fendered bodies of former NASCAR modifieds, serves entry-level drivers well. Diercks said drivers range from preteens to seniors. With specific guidelines and setup rules, he noted everyone has a shot to win weekly.
“That's what makes it fun,” Diercks said. “The cars are the same. Your skills are equal. A lot of times it's the luck of the draw of where you're at.”
The social aspect plays a huge part in driving legends cars. For many, it is just a hobby. The setup for these miniature vehicles make it perfect for recreational racers to haul it, unload and race.
“We meet a lot of nice people,” Diercks said. “It's fun to do. That's our hobby.”
Diercks encourages anyone interested to come out and see for themselves. He has played a major role in helping drivers get started. He teaches beginners, showing them how to adjust their cars and make it faster. Diercks also shares driving tips to perform on the quarter-mile track.
Diercks is determined to increase class numbers at the track and is confident more cars will join the fun.
“Hawkeye Downs is really supporting the division,” Diercks said. “That means a lot. Hopefully, we can give back to the track, too.
“We want this to be the place to go (and) the place to be on Friday nights.”
