Petrzelka survives to keep streak alive

Jul. 11, 2013 3:25 pm
CEDAR RAPIDS - If you can't beat them, bump, batter and bash them.
The whole "rubbing is racing" attitude seems to have escalated to Matt Petrzelka.
En route to his eighth hobby stock feature win last Friday, the 22-year-old overcame contact with driver Kandi Floyd to remain the only one in that division at Hawkeye Downs Speedway to visit victory lane this season. He will try to remain perfect in 2013 with weekly points races at the track Friday night, beginning at 7:30 p.m.
Petrzelka has dominated the class, winning the last two season points championships and 26 of 36 features during that time. He seemed to believe some racers have adopted rough tactics, but it is satisfying to continue his win streak.
"Everyone's trying to take me out, because they know my car is faster," Petrzelka said after the race. "It's fun going out beating them, knowing they're coming after me."
Interestingly, Floyd finished 10 points ahead of Petrzelka in the 2010 season points standings, placing second to Nathan Ballard. Petrzelka had two wins that year, leading to his successful stretch.
In their latest race, Floyd led the feature until Petrzelka moved alongside her. The two battled, banging sides before Petrzelka was able to keep control in the inside grass of Turns 1 and 2, and took the lead for good with two laps left.
Floyd pulled up to Petrzelka and nudged him with her car as he went to pull into victory lane after the cool-down lap. Petrzelka said a tire mark on the car proved he had position.
"It's not fun, trying to wreck people," said Petrzelka, expecting he would need more time repairing the car and preparing for this week's races.
Petrzelka admitted it can be hard to avoid taking the actions personally. He understands it is part of auto racing and dismisses it.
"It kind of bothers me, but at the same time it doesn't," Petrzelka said. "I'm just glad my family and sponsors come out and support me."
Gates open at 6 p.m. with hot laps at 6:35. Admission is $10, $7 for senior citizens and $5 for students. Children 12 years old and younger are free.
