Carol Ann (Smith) Coffland, 68, of Cedar Rapids, passed away peacefully Tuesday, Feb. 13, 2018, at Northbrook Manor Care Center in Cedar Rapids. Friends may gather from
10 to 10:30 a.m. Friday, Feb. 16, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Marion. Funeral services: 10:30 a.m. Friday at the funeral home by the Rev. brenda ehret. Burial: St. John's Cemetery in Independence.
Carol was born May 19, 1949, (her father's birthday), in Waterloo, the daughter of William J. and Lavonne (Barske) Smith. She attended St. John's High School in Independence and graduated in 1967. On Dec. 1, 1984, she married Jay Dee Coffland at Grace Lutheran Church in Blairstown. They were later divorced. Carol graduated from Mount Mercy College in 1971 and obtained her master's degree in social work at the University of Iowa in 1991. Carol served as a social worker for the Department of Human Services in Tennessee and Iowa. She was a licensed independent social worker and practiced social work for 38 years.
In 2006, Carol received the "Hero in the Fight against Mental Illness" Award, presented by the Iowa Chapter of the National Association for the Mentally Ill and Eli Lilly and Co.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Social Work Department at Mount Mercy University in Cedar Rapids.
