Marion edges Vinton-Shellsburg in regional quarterfinal

MARION – Marion slipped past Vinton-Shellsburg in a Class 4A, Region 6 quarterfinal at Les Hipple Sports Complex on Thursday to set up a Metro matchup in the semifinals.
Camryn Cannoy raced home from third in the top of the fifth for the eventual winning run after Maddie Knapp hit a deep fly ball that was dropped in left field.
The 4-3 victory earns the Indians (21-14) a meeting with 15th-ranked Cedar Rapids Xavier (24-15) at 7 p.m. Saturday.
Marion sophomore Alicia Steepleton allowed 10 hits in seven innings, but gave up just one earned run. She was 1-for-3 with two RBIs at the plate.
Vinton-Shellsburg (18-20) tied the score at 3-3 in the fourth when an error with the bases loaded scored two runs.
Marion trailed after the first inning, but responded with three runs in the fourth, including Shannon Sellers' go-ahead RBI.
