MARION - The hat chose incumbent Bill Huntoon to remain on the Marion Independent School board.
Huntoon, 68, of 1325 C Ave., Marion, and Shelly Pearson, 39, of 2355 11th Ave., Marion, each received 142 votes in their bids for one of the at-large seats on the school board.
When the Linn County Supervisors canvassed the election this afternoon, they broke the tie by putting both candidates' names in a red, white and blue hat, and having Supervisor Lu Barron pull one out. Huntoon's name was pulled.
Huntoon is a retired school administrator. Pearson is a research analyst.
The two greeted each other after the hat-drawing, and Pearson is not expected to ask for a recount, Auditor Joel Miller said.
