Iowa City High stumbles against Davenport North in season finale

IOWA CITY — Senior Night quickly turned into Zach Jones' Night.

City High's record-breaking receiver shined early and often, but ultimately, a rash of Little Hawk injuries included Jones.

And the end of Jones' night coincided with the end of City High's hopes to finish the season on a high note. Davenport North overcame a 28-14 halftime deficit — thanks to a big Little Hawk turnover and a stalled late drive — to win, 34-28, Friday night at Bates Field.

Already holding City High's career receptions mark, Jones etched his name further into the record books. Just one reception shy of breaking City High's record for receptions in a season, Jones snagged an 11-yard pass on the game's second play. He didn't slow down from there, hauling in 12 first-half passes for 126 yards, accounting for all 12 of quarterback Bryce Hunger's first-half completions. His three first-half touchdown grabs gave the Little Hawks (2-7, 1-5 Class 4A District 7) a leg up.

Jones went down with an injured shoulder early in the second half and the Wildcats (3-6, 1-5) took advantage. Priest Sheedy hauled in a pair of touchdown passes to close the deficit to 28-26.

Struggling to insert new options into the passing attack, Hunger rolled right and threw into traffic. Dakota Wright picked it off and took it 19 yards into the end zone as the Wildcats seized the lead.

With under six minutes to play, City High took over at its own 14. Hunger fired deep to Cole Milder who hauled it in at midfield. The Little Hawks moved to the Wildcats' 13.

On third down, Hunger bought time in the pocket and heaved toward the end zone. Marquel Poole made a diving catch for the tying score, but the play was called back for an ineligible receiver downfield. Hunger's fourth down pass sailed out of reach.
