Return trip to state for W. Dubuque Bobcats: Girls Prep Basketball Roundup

Western Dubuque shot itself back into the girls state basketball tournament last night at DeWitt.
The No. 2 Bobcats used a 12-0 run to open the second half and surged past No. 10 North Scott, 50-41, in a Class 4A regional final.
Western Dubuque (23-0) finished second in last year's state tournament.
Rose Simon-Ressler scored 13 points, Morgan Pitz 12 and Megan Maahs 10 for the Bobcats.
After a frigid shooting first half for both teams, Western Dubuque made 9 of 11 field goals in the third quarter to open a 39-25 lead. The Bobcats were 11 of 24 from the free throw line in the fourth quarter, including 6 of 16 from Pitz.
Rachel Edmundson and Karli Rucker scored 17 and 16 points, respectively, for North Scott (18-5).

— The middle periods didn't work out well for City High, and the Little Hawks fell one victory short of a trip to the state tournament.
In a Class 5A regional final at City High, the Little Hawks led 12-8 after a quarter but were then outscored 12-6 in the second period and 18-9 in the third.
Both teams scored 19 points in the final quarter, and Johnston (16-7) moved on to play next week on the big stage in Des Moines.
Courtney Joens, an Illinois recruit, scored 22 points in her last game for City. (15-8) Her sister, Ashley, added 15.
