Pamela S. Young, 72, of Iowa City, passed away Saturday March 20, 2021, at Lantern Park Specialty Care Center in Coralville.
Visitation will be Wednesday from 4 to
6 p.m. at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service in Iowa City. Funeral services will begin Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at Lensing's. (The funeral service can be viewed via Zoom Thursday. Please go to the Lensing website, to Pam's obituary page, the "Tribute Wall" and locate the link to the webcast). Social distancing guidelines are
in place and masks are required. Burial will follow the service at St. Joseph Cemetery in Iowa City. Instead of flowers and plants, memorials may be directed to Friends of the Animal Center Foundation.
Pam was born Nov. 1, 1948, in Iowa City, to Gerald and Dorothy (Kaspar) Mascher. She grew up in Iowa City, graduating from Regina High School in 1966 and Iowa City Business College in 1967.
Pam met Jack Young while in high school and they married on Oct. 18, 1969, in Iowa City.
Pam began her career at the University of Iowa in the Spanish department in 1967 before moving into the Department of Psychology, where she worked until her retirement in 2007. Her years at the U of I were marked with proud accomplishments including several years of work for the Honors Program and later contributions as an editorial assistant for psychology journals.
Pam was an active member of Jaycee Women, raising through the ranks to become president of the local chapter. As a member she enjoyed serving on volunteer projects, where she met a number of life-long friends. After her twin sons were born she became active in the Mother of Twins Club. She was also a member of P.E.O. and the local chapter of D.A.R..
Pam had a warm heart and cherished the role of mother and grandmother. Her happiest days were spent surrounded by her family. She was an unwavering cheerleader for her children and grandchildren, and was especially supportive of their academic endeavors, as she greatly valued education. Pam loved traveling to visit friends and family, and especially loved Florida. She had a soft spot for cats, especially her family cat, Max. She always looked forward to rooting for the Hawkeyes, and was also an avid crafter who loved creating crochet and embroidery projects.
Survivors include her husband, Jack; daughters, Rachel Wehrle (Ben) of Schaumburg, Ill., and Leah Calvert (Ron) of Ankeny, Iowa; sons, Nicholas Young (Jose Rosado) of Miami, Fla., and Zachary Young of Iowa City, Iowa; grandchildren, Abigail and Bella Wehrle, Norah and Hailey Calvert, and Jack and Dorothy Young; and brother, Richard Mascher of Iowa City, Iowa.
Pam was preceded in death by her parents.
