Home runs will be flying out of Perfect Game Field on July 1 before the Kernels even take the field for their 6:35 p.m. game against the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers.
That's because the Kernels will host the second annual Cedar Rapids Parks and Recreation Department 12-inch softball Home Run Derby.
The gates will open a half an hour earlier than usual - at 5 p.m. - in order for the derby contestants to showcase their skills. Fans attending the July 1 game are urged to get to the ballpark early to watch the contest beginning at 5:25 p.m.
Similar to most home run derbies, the competitors will each get 10 swings to hit as many home runs as possible.
Five area softball players competed in the event last year, putting on a brilliant display of hitting power - 18 of the 50 swings were hit out of the ballpark.
The defending Home Run Derby champion is Nick Nissen, who blasted eight home runs on 10 swings en route to winning the title.
Tickets for all Kernel home games are available on-line at www.kernels.com; in person at the Kernels Ticket Office, or by calling 896-7560 during Ticket Office Hours. The Kernels Ticket Office is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday.
