The League of Dreams youth baseball program finished its inaugural season with a series of short games at Veterans Memorial Stadium, home of the Cedar Rapids Kernels, on Tuesday night, July 27th followed by a team picnic. The games were a hit with the kids and the families.
The League of Dreams was a joint venture this summer by the Cedar Rapids Kernels, Perfect Game USA, Minor League Baseball, Minor League Baseball Charities, Rawlings Sporting Goods Company, and the Cedar Rapids Parks & Recreation Department. Seventy-six second and third grade boys and girls from Cleveland, Harrison, Taylor, Van Buren, and Wilson participated in the eight week program learning the fundamentals of baseball and teamwork.
The League of Dreams is an outgrowth of the Jones Park Project, which broke ground last fall in response to the Flood of 2008. Many of the children participating in the league were from flood-affected areas in Cedar Rapids. The free program provided these children with the chance to play baseball wearing uniforms provided by the sponsoring organizations.
