Cedar Rapids Parks and Recreation is offering two winter break programs featuring old-fashioned fun at Ushers Ferry. Christmas Break Old-Fashioned Winter Fun is on Wednesday, Dec. 28 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Families are invited to get out of the house and bring their sleds to Ushers Ferry if there's snow. Besides sledding, they'll also enjoy playing with old time toys, exploring the wilderness around the Village and warming up beside the woodstove with hot cocoa. The fee is $6/person for residents and $9/person for non-residents. Register for program #314705-01.
The second opportunity, Winter Pioneers Christmas Break Workshop, is on Thursday, December 29 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Children ages 8-12 are invited to explore the wonders of an early 1900's winter. They will learn how the pioneers heated their homes and how to make bread pudding on a woodstove. They will also make their own toys and learn necessary chores such as hauling wood and water, mending socks, and making quilts. This workshop will challenge them to make their own fun using their imaginations. The fee is $12/person for residents and $15/person for non-residents. Register for program #314502-01.
Advance registration is required for these programs through the Cedar Rapids Parks & Recreation Department. Call the Ambroz Recreation Center at (319) 286-5731 or go to
