Cedar Rapids Parks & Recreation will celebrate ten years of swimming at Bever Pool on June 22 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. A short rededication ceremony at 6:30 p.m. will be followed by refreshments, prizes, giveaways and a free evening of swimming.
On July 10, 2001, the community voted to rebuild the city's outdated pools by passing an additional one percent Local Option Sales Tax over a period of one year. Support for rebuilding Cedar Rapids outdoor pools was largely due to a grassroots citizen initiative. Bever Pool was the first pool to be rebuilt. It opened to the public on June 22, 2002. Construction of all of the city's pools was completed June 4, 2005, on time and under budget.
“We are fortunate to live in a community that loves aquatics. Many pools in the Midwest struggle to operate, yet we still have large crowds daily after ten years. The popularity of these pools is a testament to the wise investment taxpayers made in the future vitality of our community,” said Julie Sina, Cedar Rapids Parks & Recreation Director.
