Mar. 11, 2016 7:00 am
DES MOINES — Friday's games at the boys' state basketball tournament at Wells Fargo Arena:
Class 2A Championship
No. 4 CASCADE (22-3) vs. No. 2 WESTERN CHRISTIAN (24-2)
* Time: 8:05 p.m.
* In the semifinals: Cascade limited Pella Christian to 31-percent shooting in a 51-36 win. Western Christian took down Cascade's Highway-151 rival Anamosa, 69-48.
* Coaches: This is an elite matchup of retiring coaches. Al Marshall has a 738-326 career record in 47 seasons at Cascade and Cascade Aquin. This is his first championship game appearance. Western's Jim Eekhoff is 680-143 in 34 seasons and has seven state titles on his ledger.
* Top players: A pretty elite matchup of 6-foot-7 centers is on tap. Western's Josh Van Lingen came into the semifinals averaging 17.9 points per game and had a double-double of 23 points and 21 rebounds in the semifinals. He shoots in excess of 60 percent from the field. Cascade's Devin Green averages 20 points per game and also had a semifinals double-double (17 points, 12 rebounds). Guard Trace Hoffman is Cascade's other double-figures scorer and came up big with 16 points in the semis. Despite being just 6-foot-2, Kurt Trumm has had double-digit rebound totals in both state tournament games. Western has a huge size advantage on Cascade, considering Van Lingen, Dustin Marra (6-6) and Jesse Jansma (6-3) are taller than every Cascade player sans Green.
Class 4A Semifinals
No. 6 IOWA CITY WEST (20-4) vs. No. 7 CEDAR FALLS (20-4)
* Time: 3:15 p.m.
* In the quarterfinals: West slugged its way past Des Moines Hoover, 51-48. Cedar Falls got a pair of free throws from Tra'Von Fagan with .2 seconds left to beat Council Bluffs Lincoln, 60-58.
* Coaches: Steve Bergman is 520-180 in 30 seasons, 25 at West. He has won six state championships at the school. Ryan Schultz is in his third season at Cedar Falls and has a record of 41-28. This is his 14th season in the program, including stints at the freshman and sophomore levels.
* Top players: Devontae Lane and Wali Parks had 17 points each in West's 61-49 regular-season win at Cedar Falls. Lane had 24 points in the Trojans' quarterfinal win. Connor McCaffery, who is playing through an ankle injury, leads West in scoring. Fagan, sophomore guard A.J. Green and sophomore forward Treyshawn LeBeaux are CF's primary scorers.
