September brings local employment gains

Gains in local government, education and health employment made for lower unemployment rates in the Corridor during September.
The unemployment rate dropped to 5.6 percent in the Cedar Rapids metro area from the August rate of 6.1 percent on a non-seasonally adjusted basis. Nonfarm employment in the Cedar Rapids metro increased 1,600 from August's level.
Nonfarm employment in Cedar Rapids has gained 800 jobs over the past year in the Cedar Rapids metro, to reach 139,300.
In the Iowa City metro area, the unemployment rate dropped to 5.6 percent from 5.9 percent in August. The number of nonfarm jobs increased 900.
