Residents of the greater Iowa City area will now be able to listen to KGYM Radio, 1600 ESPN, on the FM dial at 106.3. KZIA, Inc., which owns KGYM, purchased an FM translator that was licensed to Mt. Vernon, IA, and relocated it to Iowa City.
In July, KGYM Radio hired longtime Johnson County radio talent Brent Balbinot and Voice of the Hawkeyes editor Todd Brommelkamp to co-host a local show called “Balbinot and Brommelkamp” from 4-7 PM weekdays. KZIA, Inc. CEO and Chief Engineer Rob Norton made arrangements for the FM translator after encouragement from listeners in Johnson County to improve the station's signal increased about tenfold following the debut of that program.
The translator will simulcast the programming from 102.9 HD-3, which airs the same blend of local and national sports programming as KGYM Radio. KGYM's popular national roster includes “The Dan Patrick Show” as well as ESPN Radio favorites like “Mike and Mike in the Morning,” “The Herd with Colin Cowherd” and “Sportscenter.” Those shows complement a strong local lineup that includes “The Gym Class” hosted by KGYM Sports Director Scott Unash and former Cedar Rapids Gazette Sports Editor Mark Dukes, “Balbinot and Brommelkamp,” “The Coaches Corner” and local high school play-by-play.
In addition to allowing listeners to enjoy local and national programming, the improved signal will open the door for KGYM Radio to increase its presence on the high school sports scene in Iowa City as well.
“We've broadcast Cedar Rapids metro high school games for about 20 years, and we hope to be active in Johnson County high schools with our improved presence there,” said Unash.
KZIA, Inc, an Iowa Corporation, owns KZIA-FM (Z102.9) and KGYM-AM (1600ESPN). KZIA-FM is the only locally-owned commercial FM broadcast station in the Corridor and KGYM is one of only three locally-owned commercial AM stations in the Corridor. KZIA Z102.9 is at
