IOWA CITY – UI wrestler Montell Marion was arrested Friday for driving while barred, authorities say.
The arresting officer said he knew it was Marion when he was pulled over.
According to the Johnson County Jail, the 23-year-old was stopped by UI police at the intersection of Melrose Avenue and Melrose Court Friday afternoon.
The officer was driving behind Marion's vehicle when he ran his plates to discover he was a barred driver, and then pulled up next to the wrestler and visually identified him, a UIPD report indicates.
Police said Marion did not know he was barred and provided his driver's license to the officer.
This is Marion's third traffic-related charge in Johnson County. Current records indicate he has been a barred driver between Nov. 19, 2011 through Nov. 17, 2012.
Marion was suspended from the wresting team in 2010 after he was arrested for OWI in 2010, but was reinstated January 2011.
Marion was released Friday afternoon on a promise to appear in court, deputies said. Driving while barred is an aggravated misdemeanor.
Iowa's Montell Marion walks off the mat after being defeated by Michigan's Kellen Russell in their 141 pound semi-final match at the 2011 Division One NCAA Wrestling Championships Friday, March 18, 2011 at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, PA. Russell will face Cal Poly's Borislav Novachkov for the title. (Brian Ray/ SourceMedia Group News)
