Aug. 29, 2009 3:18 pm
Running back Logan Pickering scored five touchdowns to lead Marion to a season-opening victory Saturday afternoon at Coe College's Clark Field.
Marion led at the half, 34-0. Waukon ended the Indians' shutout bid with two fourth-quarter touchdown runs by James Volbrecht: a 13-yarder and 40-yarder.
Pickering plunged into the end zone from 2 yards out midway through the first quarter to give Marion an 8-0 lead. He also ran in the 2-point conversion.
Early in the second, Pickering ran in from 21 yards out on a 4th-and-1 play. Marion lined up to kick the extra point but the snap was bad and holder Corey Kramer ran around end for 2 points.
Marion converted another drive later in the quarter. A 10-yard pass from quarterback Dalton Combs to tight end Ryan Hubbell took the ball to the Waukon 4. Two plays later, Pickering dove over from the 3 for his third TD. The extra-point kick went wide.
Pickering scored from 2 yards out in the final minute of the quarter. His 2-point run failed. Waukon fumbled the ensuing kickoff, with Marion recovering at the 21. Pickering eventually scored from 3 yards out.
Marion held a 246-62 yardage advantage at half. The third quarter went scoreless.
The game was postponed from Friday night and moved from Marion's Thomas Park because of flooding. Below are postgame interviews with Marion Coach Tony Perkins and Pickering.
