SOLON — An anticipated matchup of talented quarterback-tailback tandems evaporated quickly last night.
West Delaware quarterback Brent Lammers left the game during the first defensive series after an apparent blow to the head while making a tackle from his linebacker spot. His quarterbacking counterpart, Solon's Jacob Black, ran for 148 yards and five scores in Solon's 49-20 thumping of West Delaware in a Class 3A second-round playoff game at Solon.
'We challenged our team to be dominant in all three phases, and I thought we dominated in all three phases,' Solon Coach Kevin Miller said. 'It says a lot about our team. They bought into the game plan and did an outstanding job of executing it.'
The game could not have started worse for West Delaware. After a partially-blocked punt on the Hawks' first possession, Solon took over at the West Delaware 36-yard-line. Five plays later, Lammers left the game after colliding with Solon tailback Brandon Kramer, leading to a 1-yard Black keeper for a 7-0 Solon lead. Black added scoring runs of 79, 2, and 32 yards as Solon led 35-0 at halftime.
'I think all around our team played great tonight in all aspects of the game,' Black said. 'Our line especially blocked great. Our offense, we played very physical. And tough on defense.'
Without the veteran Lammers under center for West Delaware, Solon keyed on tailback Coy Roussell. The sophomore is second in 3A rushing with 1,753 yards but was held to 46 yards as Solon built a 42-0 third-quarter lead.
Roussell finished with 132 yards, including a 33-yard TD, but most of that came against Solon's second-team defense.
Solon registered three sacks and picked off Hawks' backup quarterback Max Ridenour twice and limited him to one completion for nine yards.
West Delaware closed at 9-2.Black, a transfer from Monticello, relishes his first opportunity at postseason play.
'It's been a dream,' Black said. 'We're playing great right now, we're starting to peak, and hopefully we just keep improving.'
Solon (10-1) plays Friday at No. 2 and defending state champion Decorah.
