‘Luke Duke,’ actor Tom Wopat, to appear at O’Reilly Auto Parts Rod & Custom Car Show
Feb. 16, 2015 6:23 pm
One of the 'good ol' boys' will be on hand at this year's annual O'Reilly Auto Parts Rod & Custom Car Show at the Berndes Center, 766 N. Maple St. in Monticello.
Tom Wopat, an actor and singer best known for his role as Luke Duke on 'The Dukes of Hazzard,' will sign autographs and pose from noon to 4 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.
'We've had Bo Duke and Daisy Duke here in the past, and they've attracted a lot of people to the show,' said organizer Galen Muller. 'I think Tom Wopat probably will do the same. There seems to be a lot of 'Dukes of Hazzard' fan base in the area, so we're looking forward to having him come.'
Since his role as Luke Duke, Wopat has starred on Broadway and recorded country music and standards. He recently completed a 33-city tour with Faith Prince.
Muller said the Berndes Center can hold about 40 to 45 cars and about 15 to 20 motorcycles. The vehicles compete for a number of awards and prizes. Attendees also have the opportunity to vote for People's Choice Awards.
Along with the vehicles and Wopat, 3-D Sound Company disc jockey Dave Palmer will provide music and serve as emcee at Sunday's 7 p.m. awards presentation; balloon artist 'Papa Balloon' Mark Garvey will entertain children, and artist David Fliss will be on hand to draw caricatures.
There also will be a model car contest, and all entrants will be eligible for a People's Choice Award, trophies and model kits.
Muller said he's not sure how many people will come to this weekend's show.
'It's going to depend on weather, and if we have good weather, maybe 4,000' people will be there, he said. He added rough weather last year contributed to a dip in attendance.
Show hours are 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday and 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday. Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for children under 12, but children 12 and under will be admitted free with a paid adult. Attendees also can get $1 off if they bring a can of food to benefit Four Oaks family programs. Parking is free.
