University of Iowa poll finds Gingrich extending lead

Dec. 12, 2011 1:00 pm
Newt Gingrich has surged to a 10 percentage point lead over his nearest rival, Mitt Romney, in a University of Iowa Hawkeye Poll being released this morning in Washington.
The poll of likely GOP caucusgoers found Gingrich leading the field with 30 percent. Romney polled 20 percent and Texas Rep. Ron Paul came in third at 11 percent.
Texas Gov. Rick Perry led the single-digits field with 9 percent. Michele Bachmann was at 8 percent and Rick Santorum, 5 percent.
The Gingrich lead narrows slightly among those who identified themselves as “strong” Republicans and “very likely” caucusgoers. However, Gingrich's lead grows among self-identified tea party activists.
Eleven percent of those polled were undecided.
