Beginning this week, the Cedar Rapids Kernels will continue the Kernels Summer Reading Program for the 13th consecutive year. The goal of the program is to stimulate the minds and imaginations of kids in the Corridor by encouraging reading through the spring and summer. The Kernels are able to continue their success in the reading program with the generous support of 13 year presenting sponsor Toyota Financial Services and contributing sponsors, The Gazette, Rockwell Collins, Fazoli's, and Copyworks.
Over the next 8 weeks Kernels players and Kernels mascot, Mr. Shucks, will visit over 55 elementary schools in the Corridor and beyond. This is the highest school participation for the reading program in its 13 year history. Last year 2,700 kids participated in the reading program, and participation this year is expected to reach over 3,000 kids in the Corridor. The students are rewarded with prizes for reaching reading levels ranging from 250 minutes to 1,000 minutes. Prizes include a game ticket, Fazoli's kid's meal, Kernels autograph jersey pillow, and Kernels fleece blanket.
