Iowa City only cares for the 1 percent

Make no mistake, the world is ruled by the 1 percent, as impeccably demonstrated by the decisions being made in Iowa City and our state capital. How else can you explain the approval for a 15-story housing project, 'which is ripe for the times” as alluded by one Iowa City Council member?

Really? Is there actually a need for more $1,500 one-bedroom housing for students in the center of our city? How is this happening and who is profiting? What befuddles me is those in the loop of higher education are keenly aware that online learning is our future academic world. But the 1 percent is always out for the 1 percent, so I am guessing that those apartments are really being built for rich out-of-town retirees who are flocking to the best little city of the arts in the Midwest. How disappointing - and disturbing - that our so-called progressive council members are not supporting low-income housing but putting their votes to profit-seeking developers.

I miss the Occupy movement, when impassioned activists set up tents to protest the 1 percent takeover of our economy. When will we, the majority, call for the 99 percent to rise again, to take measures in all ways and stop the 1 percent from owning our towns, states, and nation?
