IOWA CITY - A building occupied by an Iowa City electrical contractor was destroyed in a fire late Saturday night.
Fire crews were called to 1018 Walnut St., the main business address for Randall Electric, at 11:31 p.m. When firefighters arrived, they found significant smoke and fire in the rear of the building, according to a news release. Crews worked to bring the fire under control but were impeded by structural collapses and associated instability.
As of Sunday morning, firefighters continued working at the building, which is a total loss with estimated damage of $1 million, fire officials said. The Iowa City fire marshal and Iowa City police are working to determine the cause of the fire.
Iowa City firefighters were assisted by Iowa City police, Johnson County Ambulance Service, MidAmerican Energy, and fire crews from West Branch, Solon, Hills, Coralville, Swisher, Tiffin, Riverside and Lone Tree. No injuries were reported.
