President Trump easily wins Republican support in 2020 Iowa caucuses

President Donald Trump is the winner of the 2020 Iowa Republican caucuses, a largely symbolic vote as he was facing no significant opposition.

Still, Trump's campaign was using Monday's contest to test its organizational strength, deploying roughly 80 Cabinet secretaries, top Republican officials, Trump family members and state GOP elected officials around Iowa.

It's unusual for Iowa to even hold a GOP contest with an incumbent in the White House. The Iowa Republican caucuses were canceled in 1992 and 2004.

But Republican Party of Iowa Chairman Jeff Kaufmann said state officials were determined to keep the caucuses in place this year to maintain the state's status as the first in the nation to cast its ballots.

With almost all caucus sites reporting results late Monday, Trump held nearly 97 percent of the vote. Rivals Bill Weld, a former Massachusetts governor, and Joe Walsh, a former Illinois congressman, each received less than 2 percent.

Unlike Democratic caucuses, Republican caucuses are much more simple affairs.

GOP caucusgoers usually write their preferences on slips of paper and drop them in a hat or pass them to the front of the room. There are no realignment or calculations of delegate equivalents for candidates.
