It's the final day of Iowa's shortened summer sports seasons. All four Iowa high school state baseball tournament championship games are Saturday at Principal Park in Des Moines.
Saturday's state baseball scores
CLASS 1A CHAMPIONSHIP
No. 7 Don Bosco 3, No. 6 Mason City Newman 2
Don Bosco (20-1) scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth after Newman (19-6) starter Doug Taylor reached his pitch limit to end the Knights' three-year reign atop Class 1A.
Mason Denton started the two-out rally with a double and pinch runner Myles McMahon scored to tie it at 2-2 on Cedric Yoder's double. Charlie Hogan followed with another double to plate pinch runner Gabe Fernandez and give the Dons the lead. It's Don Bosco's second ever state title and first since 1978.
Taylor gave up just three hits, two walks and an unearned run while striking out seven in 5 2/3 innings. He also hit a two-run single in the fifth to put Newman up 2-1.
CLASS 2A CHAMPIONSHIP
No. 1 Van Meter 6, Des Moines Christian 0
Anthony Potthoff limited Des Moines Christian (17-7) to four hits and two walks while striking out eight in seven shutout innings as Van Meter (23-2) claimed its second straight state title.
Potthoff's sac fly gave Van Meter a 1-0 lead in the first and his sixth-inning two-run single brought in the Bulldogs' last two runs. Bryce Cole added an RBI single in the third and Zach Pleggenkuhle hit an RBI double to make it 3-0.
The Lions committed six errors and gave up four unearned runs.
CLASS 3A CHAMPIONSHIP
Norwalk 8, No. 6 Gilbert 6
Gilbert (23-4) scored five runs in the bottom of the seventh but Norwalk (20-5) held on to claim the Class 3A state title.
Evan Borst went 3-for-4 and scored two runs and Brock Miller and Tanner Foltz both had two RBIs.
CLASS 4A CHAMPIONSHIP
No. 1 Johnston 11, No. 2 Ankeny 8
Johnston scored three runs in the fifth and five more in the sixth to erase a 7-3 deficit and win the Class 4A state title.
Gabe Swansen's RBI single in the sixth got Johnston within 8-7 and, after a walk loaded the bases, Jacob Wolver tied it with an RBI single. Jack Hutchison then laid down a bunt single that gave the Dragons the lead and they added on with a bases-loaded hit batter and a sac bunt that scored another run.
