A University of Northern Iowa student has filed papers to run for mayor of Cedar Falls.
Gage Rewerts, a 22-year-old junior, says he was inspired to run for office because he feels the students are frequently overlooked.
The religion and philosophy major says students have a lot to contribute to the city and would like to see the relationship improve between them and the city as a whole.
Rewerts will be challenging Jon Crews, who was a graduate student at the University of Northern Iowa when he first ran for mayor in 1971.
Crews, who is serving his 12th term, and Rewerts are the only two candidates to file for election to the mayor's seat at this point. The filing deadline is Thursday.
