What is happening with Iowa's 2nd Congressional District election, one of the closest in the last century? As it stands Mariannette Miller-Meeks leads by six votes with twenty-two legal votes excluded from the results. Both Miller-Meeks and Rita Hart acknowledge that there are legal votes left uncounted from the second district's election, but only Hart is concerned with having all the votes included in this very close election. To rectify the situation and make sure that every vote is fairly counted, Hart filed a notice of Contest with the House of Representatives. Had these legal ballots been counted in the election results Rita Hart would win by nine votes. Miller-Meeks seeks to dismiss this motion, therefore disenfranchising voters, in order to keep her provisional seat in Congress.
If the shoe was on the other foot, I am sure Miller-Meeks would take the same course of action and contest the election. I also believe that Hart would not waiver in her commitment to the voters and join her opponent in pursuit of a full recount.
A complete recount could result in a victory for either candidate, but Hart continues to pursue this because she does not want to leave any voters disenfranchised. We all deserve to have our voices heard when electing our representatives.
