Let Iowans vote on abortion amendment

A recent guest editorial ('We won't go back to an Iowa without safe, legal abortion” Feb. 16) once again brought up the issue of the right of all women to a safe, legal abortion. They put abortion under an umbrella of 'essential reproductive health care,” which also includes birth control, annual exams and STI testing and treatment. But abortion really stands alone, because it is not health care, but rather the killing of innocent and defenseless lives. Once your body holds another human, your decisions affect not just you, but another person, however little.

The Declaration of Independence says that all humans have the unalienable right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, given to them by their creator, which governments are created to protect. There is no age limit on this right.

The editorial stated that the majority of Iowans do not support a constitutional amendment to take away the right to have an abortion, which I do not believe. But there is one way to find out. Why not let Iowans vote, and see if our state stands for protecting life, or to allow others to continue to kill the unborn?
