Man accused of trespass after suspicious school visits

A Cedar Rapids man faces a criminal trespass charge after allegedly violating a warning to stay away from Cedar Rapids schools.
Chad Chumley, 29, of 1500 Oakland Rd., Apt. 511, was arrested on the misdemeanor charge just after 8 a.m. Monday after he allegedly visited Garfield Elementary School, 1201 Maplewood Dr. NE. Chumley was found in nearby Daniels Park, where he was taken into custody.
Police last week had issued a criminal trespass warning for all Cedar Rapids school district property. The warning was issued after Chumley allegedly appeared at multiple schools and asked security questions that weren't public knowledge, police said.
Cedar Rapids school officials asked police last week to issue the trespass warning because Chumley didn't appear to have any business with the district, district officials said.
“In this case, a concern was raised after it was discovered Mr. Chumley had visited multiple schools within a couple of days,” Cedar Rapids school district spokeswoman Marcia Hughes said in an e-mail. “Since he has no children in the district and has no business with the schools, we contacted CRPD.”
“Our principals and staff are all aware of the no trespass order and will continue to be watchful,” Hughes said.
