CEDAR RAPIDS - Trails and an overlook pavilion at Mount Trashmore opened for the season this week, the Cedar Rapids/Linn County Solid Waste Agency announced.
Construction of the trails and overlook were complete last year at Cedar Rapids' capped old landfill, at 2250 A Street SW. Trails will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday.
The trails include the 5,000 foot long Stumptown Trail for walkers and hikers only; the 3,400 foot long Overlook Trail for walkers, bicyclists and those with strollers; and the 4,000 foot long Trashmore Trail flow-trail, which is downhill only and bicyclists only. Users are recommended to use tires that are at least 2 inches or wider, according to the Solid Waste Agency.
Because it is a regulated site, access will only be allowed during set hours.
The hours this year will be:
Wednesdays: 2 to 8 p.m.
Fridays: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Saturdays: noon to 5 p.m.
Sundays: 8 a.m. to noon.
Access is weather dependent. Rain and saturated trails will lead to closure to prevent trail damage. A sign outside the main gate will indicate if the trails are open or closed, and closures also will be posted on the agency website and Facebook page.
Trail users - walkers and bicyclists - are required to sign-in before using the trails. Site rules and safety tips are available at the Mount Trashmore website.
