AMES - Iowa State head football coach Paul Rhoads added sophomore running back Trever Ryen to the list of 20 walk-ons in his tenure (2009-15) to receive a scholarship.
In the season opener vs. Northern Iowa, Ryen, a native of Ida Grove, ran back a punt return 81 yards for a touchdown, the 10th-longest return in school history. He tallied his first career rushing touchdown last weekend vs. Toledo. Plus, Ryen also has caught four passes for 80 yards, including a 53-yard reception vs. Iowa.
After a year at UNI running track, Ryen transferred to Iowa State for the 2014-15 season. He contacted the Iowa State coaching staff to tell them he was interested in giving football a try. The staff obliged, offering Ryen a walk-on spot last season where he sat out as a red-shirt.
