5A No. 4 Cedar Rapids Prairie 49, 5A No. 10 Cedar Rapids Washington 46
Prairie claimed its 11th girls' basketball victory Friday night, using a big third quarter and a just-as-key free-throw advantage to hold off No. 10 Washington, 49-46, in a Mississippi Valley Conference encounter at Prairie High School.
'We lost a couple of close games at the beginning of the season, and we've learned from that,' Prairie's Mallory McDermott said. 'Now we're winning the close games. We're a lot more confident at the end of games.'
Prairie (12-2 overall, 8-1 MVC) defeated the Warriors (12-2, 8-1) for the second time this season.
5A No. 1 Iowa City High 63, 4A No. 12 Cedar Rapids Xavier 53
The 12th-ranked (4A) Saints were within a basket with three minutes to play, but couldn't pull off the upset of top-ranked City High Friday night at Xavier.
Aubrey Joens had 26 points and Rose Nkumu had 21 points to carry the Little Hawks (14-0).
Emily Japser led Xavier (9-7) with 14 points. Aubrey Jones and Libby Arnold each scored 12.
5A No. 12 Iowa City West 67, Iowa City Liberty 22
The 12th-ranked Women of Troy put the defensive clamps on the Lightning Friday night in North Liberty.
Lauren Zacharias had 16 points to lead a balanced scoring effort by West (11-3). Emma Ingersoll Weng added 14 points, Matayia Tellis had 12 points and Cailyn Morgan added 10 points.
Haley Napoli led Liberty (2-13) with seven points.

Kris Murray scored a game-high 25 points, with twin brother, Keegan, adding 17 and seven blocked shots.
Prairie made 17 of its 24 second-half field goals, a product of continually using its size to get to the rim.
'We were settling for quick shots,' Prairie Coach Jeremy Rickertsen said. 'We talked at halftime about being a little more deliberate. Let things work and open up.'
Cedar Rapids Jefferson 57, Cedar Rapids Kennedy 52
Tied going into the final quarter, 43-43, the J-Hawks (7-6) took the lead and kept it at Jefferson High School. Blaze Bouzek had 15 points, followed by Willie Guy with 14 points and Ozzie Meiborg with 13 points.
Jack Wetzel had a game-high 23 points to lead Kennedy (6-7).
Cedar Rapids Xavier 59, Iowa City High 36
The Saints had no problem in a small gym as they beat the Little Hawks at South East Junior High in Iowa City.
The game had to be moved because of a water main break at City High.
Jake Beckmann had 21 points, including four 3-pointers, to pace the Xavier (6-7) offense.
Byron Benton had 10 points for City (3-10).
Linn-Mar 82, Waterloo West 48
The Lions raced out to a 19-5 lead after one quarter Friday night in Marion.
Trey Hutcheson had 27 points, including five 3-pointers, Greg Hall scored 15 points and Hayden Passmore and Jaren Nelson each added 12 for Linn-Mar (8-4).
Waterloo West fell to 7-6.
4A No. 9 Iowa City West 61, Iowa City Liberty 34
Patrick McCaffery had 27 points as No. 9 Iowa City West won big at home.
Marcus Morgan added seven points for West (11-2).
Andre Brandon had 10 points for Liberty (6-8), which trailed 15-6 after one quarter.
