U.S. Olympic Wrestling Team Trials: Session 1

Apr. 21, 2012 11:25 am
Carver-Hawkeye Arena is packed for the U.S. Olympic Wrestling Trials, deteriming the U.S. Olympic Teams for men's and women's freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling. The crowd has been fired up at times, especially for former University of Iowa All-American and current Hawkeye wrestling assistant coach Mike Zadick for his win over Michigan NCAA champion Kellen Russell.
It was a great experience to wrestle in front of the hometown fans for Zadick.
"It was awesome," he said.
Former UNI wrestler Jordan Holm wowed the crowd with a big five-point move in extra time to beat Cheney Haight in three periods. They even cheered when Cornell three-time NCAA champion Kyle Dake scored his second and biggest win of the meet when he topped Nick Marable. Dake also beat Colt Sponseller.
"He's a real strong, powerful guy but he's only got about one or two in him," Dake said about Marable. "I thought if I got that early takedown I could weather the storm. Third period; I almost had that takedown but I just came up a little short. And I defended well. We work a lot on that the past thirty or forty days between Nationals and here; working on clinches and clinch defense. A lot of the guys in my weight are willing to go to the clinch so you've got to be good there."
Iowa State's Trent Paulson cruised to the semifinals and now faces Dake.
Spenser Mango and Max Nowry will compete for the final spot tonight at 55kg in Greco-Roman competition, while Michigan State's Steve Andrus and Tim Taylor (Army) will vie for the 120 kg Greco-Roman spot.
