NCAA D-I coaches vote for National Duals proposal

Sep. 8, 2012 10:09 pm
The National Wrestling Coaches Association announced the results of a vote that approved a proposal to have the NCAA team champion decided by a 16-team dual event. Thirty-nine NCAA Division I wrestling coaches voted in favor of the action, while 36 were against and two abstained.
The next step includes review by an NCAA Cabinet Committee, which is expected to be early next week (NWCA letter mentioned it would likely be Sept. 11), and the change could be in place as early as 2013-14 season.
InterMat has a letter from NWCA President and Cornell University head wrestling coach Rob Koll to members of the NWCA about the vote results and upcoming actions, including October meetings to discuss concerns and challenges for wrestling.

University of Iowa head coach Tom Brands is an opponent of the move. Penn State Coach Cael Sanderson has also spoken out against the change.
Below is a statement Brands released to flowrestling.org, saying the Hawkeye wrestling program is opposed to the proposition.
