IOWA CITY - Scott Tribbey couldn't even remember his shot for several moments after ending the annual City High-West boys' soccer match.
But the crowd of red-clad fans who enveloped him let him know what it meant.
Tribbey, a junior defender for City High, dribbled down the middle of the field and fired a shot from about 30 yards out and into the net as time expired for a 1-0 Little Hawks' victory. The victory ended top-ranked West's 33-game winning streak over two seasons and drew the fourth-ranked Little Hawks into a tie with West atop the Mississippi division of the MVC.
West girls' coach Dave Rosenthal brought Tribbey the game ball amid the postgame celebration, and West goalie Zach Serovy hugged Tribbey and complimented him on the shot.
'It was pretty lucky,” Tribbey said.
'I just saw him coming across the middle,” City defender Adam Nicholson said. 'And he bent it into the top corner.”
West Coach Brad Stiles was sure time had expired.
'Not a chance,” Stiles said. 'Because I looked at it about two (seconds), and he was still taking a touch and my defender was still diving in. At that point there's no way he got it off in time. I'm pretty sure. But it was close enough to leave it be.”
Tribbey thought the game was headed to overtime.
'I started dribbling it and I wasn't sure I made it or not,” he said. 'This is 100 times better than making a last-second shot in basketball.”
City (10-2, 9-1) was the more dominant offensive team in the first half, but shots were relatively even in the second half.
'We were knocking and knocking and knocking the whole game ... and this time you have to say we deserved it because we were knocking the whole game,” City High Coach Jose Fajardo said.
