CEDAR RAPIDS - Samantha Schroder is City High's golden girl this spring. For the second time in 11 days the freshman scored the winning goal in overtime to give the Little Hawks a Mississippi Valley Conference soccer victory.
The 1-0 victory at Prairie on Monday leaves City (7-2, 6-1 MVC) one game behind Hempstead in the Mississippi Division. Prairie (3-4, 3-4) is third in the division, having lost only to ranked teams.
Samantha's sister, Sydney, had the assist on the winning attack.
'Oh, it was overtime and I was just so tired,” Sydney said. 'I thought I could make one final run. I saw the opportunity. There were some girls next to me. I just had to push through them. I heard her yelling my name. I kicked a ball hoping she'd get it, like I didn't know where it was going.”
'(Sydney) saw her opportunity,” Samantha said. 'She dribbled the ball up. I was right there in the middle. I yelled her name. She played the perfect ball. I just ran to it and kicked it as hard as I could hoping it would go in.”
The match was as even as the score. Both teams had multiple chances but both keepers, City's Naomi Meurice and Prairie's Riley Hanna, and back lines were up to the challenge.
'They were very, very fast and energetic,” Sydney Schroder said of the Prairie Hawks.
Prairie had its prom two nights ago, but the Hawks were focused and ready to play.
'We controlled the ball a good majority of the game with the exception of that overtime,” Prairie Coach Dave Kea said. 'They did a great job of really pressing. They continued to attack with their back line and their midfielders. They just found an open lane and capitalized.
'Nobody likes to lose on a golden goal. We've got to learn from it and move on.”
City's Ashley Smith was injured about 15 minutes into the first half but walked off the field. She appeared dazed and didn't play the rest of the game. Coach Michael Prunty said she would be examined Tuesday.
'I think she'll be OK,” he said. 'She wanted to go back in.”
