CEDAR RAPIDS -- You hate to say any game in mid-April is a must-win situation, but the Cedar Rapids Washington boys' soccer team knew it had to have last night's match against No. 4 Cedar Rapids Kennedy if it was going to have any hope of staying in the MVC race. After being battered by attack after attack in the second half, the Warrior back line held off the Cougars and forced the game to overtime. In the first minute of OT, Washington's Jacob Bjornsen bent a free kick from just barely outside the box into the net for the 1-0 victory. 'I saw the wall shifting to the right and the net open, so I thought I'd bend it like Beckham,' Bjornsen joked. He did just that, setting off a wild celebration by his teammates. 'We worked hard and we had been on a two-game losing streak, so it was good to get another win,' he said. 'They are a great team and have everyone back. It's a big win for us.' Bjornsen's winner was set up by a rare Warrior run at the Kennedy (6-2, 4-2 MVC) goal. Kennedy's Mitchell Bobbin was assessed a yellow card after a tackle on Washington's Emmanuel Hidalgo-Wohlleben and the ball was placed just inches outside the 18. 'It was just everyone playing hard, and it was a call that went our way,' Bjornsen said. Kennedy Co-Coach Mike Robertson said he had no comment on the official's call. 'We had some opportunities and especially in the first half inside the penalty area we'd work it up, but we needed a little more composure in there. It's the nature of the game a little bit. Some shots were a little bit too wide, or we just pulled the trigger a little bit too late.'
