WEST LIBERTY - The West Liberty boys' soccer team, which began practicing on March 12, and will play its first game against Muscatine on March 29 in Muscatine.
The Comets are a lass 1A team, the Muskies a 3A program.
The 2011 season was not a good one for the program. The Comets went 3-10-2 and Michael Gunn, varsity coach, said: “It was the worst season of the last four years.”
The team is hoping this season is going to be better.
Six players return from last year's varsity team, lead by Elvis Flores and Hernan Bernabe, with additional playmakers Dalvi Acevedo (transfer from Missouri), Raudel Fierro (freshman) and Torben Zoeller (exchange student from Germany) .
‘This season is going to be a good one," said Flores, a senior defender. "We can make it far this season."
West Liberty has a hard schedule with teams like three-time state champion Iowa City Regina and 2011 state runner-up Solon. But everybody is excited to see what the soccer team can do this year.
