CEDAR RAPIDS — Early on Tuesday, Micah Frisbie reflected back to when his goal in double overtime defeated Cedar Rapids Prairie last season.
In his return trip to John Wall Field Tuesday night, history repeated itself for the Iowa City West junior.
'It is definitely cool,' Frisbie said after his header less than seven minutes into overtime gave Class 3A No. 3 Iowa City West a 2-1 victory over No. 6 Cedar Rapids Prairie in a Mississippi Valley Conference boys' soccer showdown. 'Earlier in the day, I was actually thinking about what if it happens again? And it happened.'
The goal was the second of the game for Frisbie, who now has four this season. He fielded a corner kick from junior teammate Brody Schilling and used his head to punch it past the Prairie goalkeeper before sprinting to the sideline in celebration.
'I saw it coming in,' Frisbie said. 'There was no defender on me when he was out there, so I knew I had to put it away when I saw it.'
Frisbie — a first team all-conference selection last season after finishing second on the Trojans with 10 goals — also won a game for West with an overtime goal last season in a 3A state quarterfinal. He got the scoring started against Prairie with a strike in the 11th minute.
'He is starting to develop a motor,' West Coach Brad Stiles said. 'Even for a big kid, he did a lot of running tonight. Good for him. He found a way to keep it under the bar.'
The victory was the seventh in a row for West (7-1, 4-0 MVC) and its sixth over a team that has been ranked at some point this season.
'It is always good to come out ahead on a ranked team win, that is for sure,' Stiles said.
University of Missouri-Kansas City recruit Mateaus Lewis scored the only goal for Prairie (6-2, 4-2) via a penalty kick in the 59th minute. Lewis and teammate Andrew Russell lead the Hawks with 11 goals apiece this season
Prairie visits No. 4 Iowa City High on Thursday afternoon, while West entertains No. 11 Cedar Rapids Kennedy later that evening.
