Iowa high school football rankings: Dike-New Hartford regains sole possession of 1A No. 1

After a week of sharing the top spot in Class 1A, Dike-New Hartford is flying solo again.

Bellevue's defeat of former co-No. 1 West Branch has re-established DNH as the top team in this week's Gazette/KGYM football poll. The Comets tripped West Branch, 28-20, Friday at Bellevue, a week after Bears Coach Butch Pedersen earned his 300th career victory.

Status quo prevailed at the top of the other five classes. West Des Moines Valley (4A), Cedar Rapids Xavier (3A), Monroe PCM (2A), Hudson (Class A) and Don Bosco (8-Player) remain at No. 1, with Xavier, PCM and Don Bosco unanimous choices.

Each of last week's 4A top 10 teams were victorious in Week 5, and the order stays the same throughout. Valley is followed by fellow unbeatens Ankeny Centennial and Cedar Falls, then it's West Des Moines Dowling and Bettendorf.

Xavier and Lewis Central continue to dominate the 3A landscape, and both are heavily favored to continue that trend this week. Pela is third; Solon and North Scott share the fourth spot.

In 2A, Spirit Lake holds a slight edge over Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley for the No. 2 spot behind PCM. Algona — which is 5-0 for the first time since 1972 — is fourth, Clear Lake fifth.

West Branch's loss moves the next four teams up a spot. West Sioux is second, followed by defending-champion Van Meter, South Central Calhoun and Bellevue.

The top six remain the same in Class A, but the potential is there for major movement next week. No. 1 Hudson hosts No. 5 Saint Ansgar, and No. 2 Algona Garrigan hosts No. 4 Belmond-Klemme. Avoca AHSTW is third.

Don Bosco is followed in 8-Player by Exira-EHK, Ar-We-Va, New London and Iowa Valley. The Dons host No. 9 Northwood-Kensett this week; Ar-We-Va is at No. 6 Newell-Fonda.
