CEDAR RAPIDS - The Xavier football season has started with Schulte in charge.
Reggie Schulte is a new math teacher and varsity football assistant coach at Xavier High School. He graduated in 2013 and played quarterback for the Saints.
Schulte always has enjoyed sports, especially football.
As a new coach, he likes being a part of the team again and wants to help the players grow to earn success.
'I have had a lot of great coaches who inspired me and formed me into the person I am today,” Schulte said.
He hopes to have an impact on the players he coaches in a similar way.
'I think the players have done a good job of working hard in the offseason and summer,” he said. 'However, we have still got a long ways to go to where we need to be as a team.”
While has had the opportunity to coach with his father - head coach Duane Schulte. He also has the chance to coach his younger brother, senior Quinn, the current Saints quarterback.
'It's fun to be able to have him around to analyze the game with and also joke around with,” Quinn said. 'He has taught me so much growing up in terms of knowledge of the game and has helped my teammates who grew up with me.”
Reggie hopes the team can stay focused on having small goals, such as getting a little better every day. He thinks it will help the bigger goals take care of themselves.
Xavier is top-ranked and 3-0, beating Regina, 44-7; Decorah, 45-3; and Davenport Assumption, 48-0. The Saints play at West Delaware tonight. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
