Cedar Rapids Solid Waste & Recycling customers can set out unlimited amounts of accepted yard waste or organic materials each week, as long as it is packaged correctly. Accepted organic materials include tree limbs and branches less than 5 inches in diameter, grass clippings, plant matter, and fruit and vegetable peelings.
There are two ways to set organic items out for collection: in the YARDY cart and in extra bundles. The 95 gallon YARDY cart can hold up to 300 pounds of material. All material should fit inside the cart, so the lid can close completely for collection. If customers have a number of branches and limbs less than 5 inches in diameter, the branches can be bundled using a natural fiber string or twine in 2 foot by 3 foot bundles. There is no limit on the number of bundles customers can set out for collection.
The large brown yard waste bags are only collected during the spring and fall leaf vacuum collection period.
If customers have questions about how to deal with their yard waste, the can go to http://bit.ly/OrganicCollection or call the Solid Waste & Recycling Office at 286-5897.
