IOWA CITY — One person was killed and another injured in a fiery crash on Interstate 80 in Iowa City Friday morning.
The crash happened after a semi driven by Shawn C. Freeman, 24, of Plattsmouth, Neb., heading westbound, drifted off the road and hit the Dubuque Street overpass shortly after 8 a.m., according to Trooper Bob Conrad. No other vehicles were involved.
A passenger in the semi, Gary A. Griffey, 39, of Lafayette, Ind., was taken to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, where he died of injuries suffered in the crash, according to a State Patrol report Friday afternoon. Freeman was also injured and taken to UIHC.
Troopers initially closed I-80 and the Dubuque Street bridge in both directions. All roadways have now reopened.
Conrad said the two people injured were both occupants of the semi.
