WILLIAMSBURG - The Williamsburg golf team is gearing up for another successful season on the greens.
Head Coach Todd Subbert is in his fifth season as head coach and looking forward to doing big things this year. After a 40-6 2011 dual record and runner-up finish in the Wamac Super Meet, the Raiders are looking for their fourth consecutive Wamac West title.
"We've been fortunate enough to win the Wamac West the last three years, so we're hoping to be in the mix again this year," Subbert said.
The Lady Raiders return seven seniors, led by returning letterwinners Abbie Zimmerman, Jamie Knock, Rachel Zuber and Kirsten Burgy.
"Jamie and Abbie are three- and four-year letterwinners, respectively, and we will definitely rely on their leadership and scoring ability to help lead this team," Subbert said.
The Raiders did not qualify anyone for state last spring, but are looking to turn it around and meet the high standards that have been set for them.
Subbert is looking forward to the talent and potential his players bring to the table.
"We'll have two (or) three positions pretty much set, but the other sports could be filled by a number of players," he said. "We are fortunate enough to have probably 10-12 kids that could play varsity golf.
"What that does is create a competitive environment and pushes kids to improve their game, which certainly will help build our team throughout the season."
The Raiders will continue to build off last year's successful program with bigger goals in 2012. With a powerful group of seniors and others fighting for varsity spots, the Raiders should be hard to beat.
