West Delaware leads 3A state golf meet

The West Delaware boys' golf team came out firing in the opening round of the Iowa High School Athletic Association Class 3A state meet at Ames Golf and Country Club.
The Hawks posted a 301 team total, including three of the top six individual scores, after the first of two rounds, leading Creston-OM by 14 strokes. The second round is set for Saturday at 8 a.m.
West Delaware sophomore Clayton Larsen was tied for second with 71, one shot back of Centerville's Alex Moorman. The Hawks' Harrison Guetzko and Bryce Frick carded a 74 and 75, respectively. Jake Gretzner rounded out the team score with an 81.
Decorah's Sam Sacquitne also shot 75. Williamsburg was ninth with 336.
In 2A, Mount Vernon was second in the team race, shooting 319 after the first round at Spring Valley Golf Course at Livermore. South Hamilton was first with 309.
The Mustangs' Connor Herrmann was tied second with 75, five shots off the lead. Andy DeCamp had an 80 and Tommy Hook and Drew Wolfe each added 82. South Winneshiek's Trevor Schweinefus shot 77.
East Buchanan freshman Chris Cooksley finished the first round of the 1A state meet at Marshalltown's American Legion Golf Course tied for fourth with a 75. The Bucs were fifth with 330 and Lisbon was eighth with 341.
