UPDATE: A recount on Monday did not change the outcome in the University Heights City Council election.
Jim Lane held onto the fifth and final spot on the council by one vote over Rachel Stewart, 269 votes to 268, Johnson County Auditor Tom Slockett said last night. The results immediately following the election earlier this month had Lane beating Stewart by two votes.
Stewart requested the recount.
The University Heights election was seen by many people as a referendum on a proposed condominium project that has divided the community, which is surrounded by Iowa City. Lane supports the project and Stewart is in opposition.
With Lane's victory confirmed, opponents of the project hold a 3-2 edge on the City Council.
