IOWA CITY - A quick update to yesterday's post about the Nov. 3 City Council election.
The filing deadline for candidates was 5 p.m. today. You can see the full slate of candidates here.
Of note:
- Connie Champion will be going for what is believed to be an unprecedented fourth term. She will be challenged by Mark McCallum.
- There are five at-large candidates for two open seats, meaning a primary election will be held Oct. 6.
- Three of those five are University of Iowa students - Dan Tallon, Jeff Shipley and Jared Bazzell. While students have served on the council before, it is rare, City Clerk Marian Karr said. My guess is it also has been uncommon for at least three students to run in the same election, but I have not had time to research that. The other two at-large candidates are Terry Dickens and Susan Mims.
