Dancing in the street: Iowa City summer series moving off PED Mall

IOWA CITY - While the PED Mall gets a makeover this summer, music still will fill the air for the Friday Night Concert Series. The Summer of the Arts free programming will shift to North Clinton Street, between Iowa Avenue and Jefferson Street, by the Pentacrest.

The 14 family-friendly concerts showcase local, regional and international music-makers from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. May 18 to Aug. 31, beginning with City and West high school jazz ensembles.

Hancher is partnering with Summer of the Arts to bring Zeshan Bagewadi's soulful Indo-Pakistani feel to the stage May 25.

Other menu highlights include the spicy vocals and savory horns from the Dandelion Stompers June 15; a mixture of humor and folk music from local band Flash in a Pan on July 20; and the ex-indie rock troubadour sound from Gloom Balloon on Aug. 10.

Several concerts feature double-headers, and the final program on Aug. 31 features a triple-header with Younger, Otros Outros and Anthony Worden.

If Mother Nature decides to add a dash of flash on a Friday night, the concert will move to the lower level of the Chauncey Swan Parking Ramp on the corner of Washington and Gilbert streets. Relocated concerts will be announced by 4 p.m. show days and shared online at Summerofthearts.org and on social media.
