Editor's note: Erin Moeller, 34, of Mount Vernon, is a lifelong runner who has qualified for the last two Olympic Marathon Trials. A native of Ryan, she's a graduate of North-Linn and Wartburg who works for Benchmark Inc. in Cedar Rapids. She has two children - Ryne (7) and Evelyn (3) - with husband Andy.
With the Fourth of July just around the corner, my running focus is completely on the upcoming Alliant Energy 8K.
We are really fortunate in the Cedar Rapids and surrounding communities to have such a spectacular event in our backyard. This race is an opportunity for abilities of all ages to toe the line with some of the fastest runners around. The committee does a terrific job of recruiting some speedy talent to blaze the trail here in Cedar Rapids each Fourth of July.
Certainly this is an event that I look forward to each year. Admittedly, it's one that I tend to get pretty nerved up over. As much as I love to race, there's always an added element of pressure that I place on myself when competing on “the big stage” right here at home.
With the race on July 4, we all know the temperature is likely to be hot with high humidity. It is really important to hydrate yourself properly when preparing for these conditions. In addition to consuming a lot of good ol' H2O, I also take in some electrolytes to keep my body fueled following hard workouts completed in summer conditions.
Eating a balanced diet and getting adequate rest also are really important as I focus on the upcoming race. I try to remain disciplined with my diet in the days leading up to the race while reminding myself that there is always time to indulge after it's over.
Another great thing to do is run the racecourse in advance. With the course being all new in 2011, I took the time a year ago to do a tour in the days leading up to July 4. I found this to be really beneficial as I prepared mentally for the race. During my training runs or before I fell asleep at night, I could visualize the course, think about my race plan and prepare my mind for what I was hoping my body would accomplish.
Just like Coach used to say - “What the mind believes, the body achieves.”
When race day finally arrives, I remind myself to enjoy all the festivities and have fun. The kids are typically all decked out in red, white and blue, and it's a terrific way to kick off our Independence Day celebration.
